I was at the front desk of a clients offices the other day and this lady who owns a stationary company, clearly with a sales background came in to check that they had supplies. She never told them she was a sales lady but her tone, body language, and volume all spoke of opportunists. That was what pinged in my head. I do wish sales people would change their approach as you suggest because the reason they are disliked so much is because they walk a precarious tight rope between professionalism and vulgarity.
